Field Trip now supports Basecamp's Card Table in Slack and Google Chat

Basecamp's Card Table is a simple way to organize work visually, with cards moving across columns as the work moves along. It's great for anything with stages, like a sales pipeline, a content calendar, or a bug tracker.

We're happy to announce that Field Trip now notifies your Slack and Google Chat teams about your Card Table! Your team will hear about it when someone:

Creates a card

Moves a card to another column

Completes a card

Archives or restores a card

New cards include the column, the description, who it's assigned to, and the due date, so your team knows what's coming without opening Basecamp. Moves are kept short and sweet, so a busy board won't flood your channel.

Lately, we've had customers asking if we could bill them annually. The idea of expensing monthly invoices is time consuming and annoying. Others want to prepay a number of months to help balance their budgets. For a variety of reasons we've been manually moving more and more people to annual subscriptions.

Starting today, we will no longer be manually moving people to annual subscriptions. We've released our annual plan!

When you sign up, you can select either a monthly or annual subscription. If you choose annual, we'll give you one month for free! If you're already a monthly subscriber you can move to an annual subscription and receive the same discount.

We're continuing to add features and your suggestions help us find what we should be building next. So email us at hello@enjoyfieldtrip.com. We can start working on what's next together!

You've just received an important email, now what? If you happen to be part of a Basecamp team, you can forward emails into a Basecamp project to share and discuss privately.

We know that Slack and Google Hangouts Chat can be powerful notification centres for your team. They can bring activity to where your team works and help everyone stay in-the-know. Even that teammate who never checks Basecamp.

We're happy to announce that Field Trip now notifies your Slack and Google Hangouts Chat teams about email forwards in Basecamp! This brings more people into your discussions, sharing knowledge, and taking advantage of your team's diversity. 📬👩‍💻💬🧑‍💻💬👨‍💻💬💡

Since we released Google Hangouts Chat support a month ago, we've been hard at work building our most popular customer requested feature.

Field Trip now sends your Basecamp Docs & Files activity to Slack!

When we originally released Field Trip, Docs & Files weren't high on our priority list. Our team didn't use the docs & files section often, so we put our energy into other areas. The number of requests we got to add docs & files support made it a no brainer to add as our next feature.

Now when you add something new to Docs & Files, a notification is sent to Slack or Google Hangouts Chat. We'll share your Basecamp activity with your team when you create new documents, upload files, or link cloud files from Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, or OneDrive.

Simple as that, Field Trip supports all your Doc & File needs. To find out all the types of Basecamp activity Field Trip supports, check out our FAQ.

We're continuing to add features and your suggestions help us find what we should be building next. So email us at hello@enjoyfieldtrip.com. We can start working on what's next together!

Field Trip now shares your Basecamp activity in Google Hangouts Chat.

We originally built Field Trip to replace our Basecamp email notifications with helpful Slack messages. It was an app designed to make our small team spend less time in email and more time focusing on work happening in Basecamp.

Less than a year later we've had thousands of users let us know that Field Trip helped make their Basecamp 2 and 3 experiences better!

Field Trip has been VASTLY more popular than we anticipated. So when Google reached out and asked us to add Hangouts Chat support, we jumped at the opportunity… Right after we recovered from our collective shock that Google actually reached out to us!

Discover and install Field Trip from Google Hangouts Chat

Google Hangouts Chat and Slack are fundamentally different platforms. Thanks to the support from the Google Hangouts Chat team, we redesigned Field Trip to integrate seamlessly with the Hangouts Chat user experience. From within Hangouts Chat, you can discover, install, and setup Field Trip with complete Basecamp 2 and 3 support!

Add a Basecamp project from Google Hangouts Chat

We kept it simple, all you need to do is choose a Basecamp project and a Google Hangouts Chat room. Then any Basecamp activity added to your timeline is sent to the Hangouts Chat room that you picked. That's it.

We've added Basecamp 2 support to Field Trip after discovering half our users rely on it.

Basecamp isn't like most other software as a service products. Every few years a major new version of Basecamp is released that rethinks how their product functions. The new version doesn't replace the old version, it's released and supported in addition to the previous versions that teams are still happily using. Customers can update when it's easiest for them… or not at all!

That means there are currently three distinct versions of Basecamp still being actively supported: Basecamp Classic, Basecamp 2, and Basecamp 3. Because of this approach, there are three distinct versions of the Basecamp API that we had to choose from when we started Field Trip. We naively thought this was a no-brainer and almost everyone would be using Basecamp 3. After all, it was released in 2015.

Two hours after we released on the Slack App Directory we started to notice a problem. Users were signing up for Field Trip, but lots weren't finishing the installation steps! We thought we had an on-boarding bug and started investigating where users were dropping off.

Turns out, we did have a small bug that stopped a handful of users from activating Field Trip which we quickly fixed. But the biggest surprise was that a ton of teams were using Basecamp 2!

Half our sign ups were using Basecamp 2.

Whoops.

We didn't want to assume a solution and repeat our mistakes, so we quickly added a button to request Basecamp 2 support. Over the next few weeks, 40+ users asked for Basecamp 2. This gave us all the validation we needed to start working.

After a few months of development (and Christmas break!) we're ready to start sending your Basecamp 2 activity to Slack!

We built Field Trip to solve our own communication problems between Basecamp 3 and Slack. In hindsight, we got lucky because we guessed that everyone was a Basecamp 3 user just like us. If we had talked to our users earlier we would have known that a ton of companies were still using Basecamp 2.

Starting with Basecamp 3 was still the right choice, but we could have built Basecamp 2 support earlier instead of pivoting right after we launched. In short, we learned a very valuable lesson:

Never assume what your customers want, just ask them.

You've seen what happens if you leave things up to us, so make sure you reach out and let us know what you want Field Trip to do next! Your suggestions have already helped us prioritize what to work on so keep the ideas coming by emailing us at hello@enjoyfieldtrip.com.

Update, October 2026: Basecamp 3 and Basecamp 4 have since become Basecamp 5. Field Trip supports both current versions of Basecamp: Basecamp 2 and Basecamp 5.

Introducing Field Trip, a solution for sharing Basecamp timeline activity in Slack.

Field Trip shares your Basecamp activity in Slack.

Such a simple idea has helped us, and over 100 other teams, use both Slack and Basecamp to their full potential.

We've been Basecamp users for years. It's an outstanding tool that lets our team work together and stay organized. When you combine it with email and Campfire, you've got everything you need to run a business. But, the system falls apart when you switch from email and Campfire to Slack for team communication.

As soon as we moved to Slack our Basecamp email notifications sat neglected and unread in our inboxes. We'd respond to the notifications eventually, but always a few days or even weeks later. Not the responsiveness you need when you're bootstrapping a small business!

We didn't want to abandon Basecamp, because it was the perfect tool for our team. But we needed a way to keep on top of all the work happening without relying on email notifications.

We wanted our Basecamp activity in Slack.

Field Trip takes your team activity from Basecamp and shares it in Slack. We kept it simple, all you need to do is choose a Basecamp project and Slack channel. Then any activity Basecamp adds to your timeline is sent to the Slack channel that you picked. That's it. Keep working the same way you already do and your entire team will be able to stay on top of work as it happens.

We didn't want to reinvent the wheel. There were a few alternatives that already send Basecamp activity to Slack, but they lacked the quality we need from tools that keep our business running. Here's a quick rundown of the other solutions we found before we built Field Trip:

Zapier - After setting up some multi-trigger zaps, Zapier lets you send a lot of your Basecamp activity to Slack. Unfortunately, it's in raw, unformatted HTML. Creating multi-trigger zaps may be easy for some of you, but it's not easy for the rest of us. Plus, setting up all those zaps is pricey.

Slack Email Forwarding - You can forward your Basecamp notification emails directly to Slack. The messages come from Slackbot and look a bit wonky, but it's free, easy to set up, and gets some Basecamp activity in Slack.

Open Source - We found two projects on GitHub that share your Basecamp activity in Slack. Unfortunately, both are inactive, require paid hosting, maintenance effort, and don't have the quality you'd want in a system that helps your team be productive.

Just in case it wasn't clear, none of these options solved our problem. We weren't getting our Basecamp activity in Slack in a way that improved our team productivity. We built Field Trip to help Basecamp work with Slack in a high quality package that looks great while staying simple.

We're super happy with our first release and we want to keep making Field Trip better! Did we miss some Basecamp activity that you need in Slack? Would you like to customize what messages Field Trip sends to Slack?

We're continuing to add features to Field Trip and your suggestions will help us prioritize what to work on next, so email us at hello@enjoyfieldtrip.com. We can start working on what's next together!
